Run an Exhaustive JPEG2000 Check

The Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass performs a deeper validation of the picture assets in a DCP by checking every frame in every picture MXF.

This guide explains the difference between the standard JPEG2000 check and the Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass, how to enable it, and when the additional verification time may be worthwhile.

What does the Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass do?

Picture assets in a DCP contain JPEG2000-compressed frames wrapped in MXF.

The Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass checks every frame in every picture MXF.

This provides a deeper validation of the picture assets than the standard verification pass.

Standard verification versus exhaustive verification

Standard verification

Standard verification performs a fast validation of the picture assets by checking a selection of JPEG2000 frames.

This keeps normal DCP verification relatively fast while still checking the picture essence as part of the overall package verification.

Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass

After the normal verification has completed, the Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass can be run as an additional verification pass.

It checks every frame in every picture MXF.

Its results are added to the existing verification results and are included together in the same report.

Because every picture frame is checked, the test can take considerably longer to complete, especially for feature-length content.

The Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass provides the highest level of confidence that the picture assets are free from JPEG2000 encoding or corruption issues.
Step 1

Run the normal verification first

Start by running the normal DCP verification.

DaCaPo performs the standard package, metadata, asset, and JPEG2000 checks and displays the verification results when the run is complete.

Step 2

Run the Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass

After the normal verification has finished, click Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass.

DaCaPo then checks every frame in every picture MXF.

The exhaustive JPEG2000 results are added to the results from the normal verification, so both verification runs are included in the same report.

The exhaustive pass can take considerably longer than the normal verification, especially for feature-length DCPs.

Step 3

Review the results

Review the verification results when the check is complete.

JPEG2000 problems found during the exhaustive pass are reported together with the other verification results.

As with normal verification, results are grouped as Passed, Warning, Failed, or Skipped.

When should you use it?

Use the Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass when you want the deepest available validation of the DCP picture assets.

Because it checks every frame, it is more time-consuming than the standard JPEG2000 verification.

Standard verification is faster and checks a selection of JPEG2000 frames. The exhaustive pass is useful when the additional verification time is acceptable and you want the highest level of confidence in the picture assets.

Common problems

Verification takes much longer than usual

This is expected when Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass is enabled. Every frame in every picture MXF must be checked.

A JPEG2000 problem is reported

Review the reported verification result and correct the affected DCP before delivery.

I do not need to check every frame

Leave Exhaustive JPEG2000 Pass disabled. Standard verification performs a faster validation by checking a selection of JPEG2000 frames.
